Big Sister Films make compelling true stories for television, streaming platforms and theatrical release. Founders Katie Buchanan and Kira Phillips met as directors at RDF Television in the 90's. During the past 25 years they have made over 100 hours of premium factual content for the BBC, C4, Netflix and theatrical release, winning a host of plaudits and awards for their work.

Kira Phillips

Co-Founder

Kira Phillips is one of the UK's leading female documentary directors. Starting her career working on the highly controversial 'Against Nature' for Channel 4 and 'The Critics' with Jon Ronson, she was a Broadcast Magazine Hotshot three years in a row. Her first film was 'Girlfriends From Pristina' for Channel 4, and has since made dozens of acclaimed singles and series such as 'Doing Time', 'Stairlift To Heaven' and 'Baby Mothers' for Channel 4 and 'A Dad is Born' a Wonderland for BBC2.

More recently she has gained a reputation for directing powerful and award-winning documentaries with complex ethical issues at their heart, including the Channel 4 series 'My Baby's Life: Who Decides?' about decisions faced by parents of children on life support and C4 feature documentary 'Teachers Training to Kill' about the arming of teachers in US schools.

She lives with her husband and three teenage sons in London.

Katie Buchanan is a multiple award-winning documentary director and producer. During her time as Head of Documentaries at Keo Films, she was the originator of the seminal 'The Romanians are Coming' which won RTS, Broadcast and Grierson Awards as well as returning hit series 'Skint'. She championed female talent whilst Creative Director at Sundog Pictures, with female-led commissons including Grierson shortlisted 'What's the Matter with Tony Slattery?'

Katie has produced documentaries about the American justice system, unaccompanied child migrants, female rough sleepers, pupil referral units and most recently a Kevin Macdonald feature documentary about the coronavirus pandemic. She began her career directing critically acclaimed films such as Grierson nominated 'George Melly's Last Stand' and ratings hit 'Extraordinary Breastfeeding', watched by over 5 million people.

She has two grown-up daughters and lives in East London.
